Forms and Sources of Boron in Soils

Total Boron

The total boron content of most agricultural soils ranges from 1 to 467mg kg-1, with an average content of 9 to 85 mg kg-1. Gupta (46) reported that total boron on Podzol soils from eastern Canada ranged from 45 to 124 mg kg-1. Total boron in major soil orders, Inceptisol and Alfisol, in India ranged from 8 to 18 mg kg-1 (47). Such wide variations among soils in the total boron content are mainly ascribed to the parent rock types and soil types falling under divergent geographical and climatic zones. Boron is generally high in soils derived from marine sediments.
