Hemigraphis
The Waffle Plant. This frost-tender perennial is grown mainly for its attractive foliage. It is a native of tropical Malaysia. It is a prostrate growing plant with spreading, rooting stems. Its satiny leaves are slender and lance-shaped with toothed, scalloped, or lobed margins. They are grayish-green stained with red-purple above and darker purple beneath. The tiny white flowers grow intermittently throughout the year. This plant reaches a height of 6 inches and has an indefinite spread.
Pot Cultivation
This plant needs a minimum temperature of 60 degrees. In cool regions grow it as a house or greenhouse plant, in well-drained soil or potting mix. It needs shelter from hot sunshine. Water is abundantly while it is growing actively; less in the winter. Cut back straggly growth in the spring.
Propagation
Stems cuttings may be started in the summer.
