Koelreuteria

These hardy, deciduous trees are natives of China. They grow quickly and are excellent for growing in lawns or shading patios. They can be grown along country roads and city streets, since they are tolerant of polluted air. The blue-green leaves grow from 8 to 15 inches long and consist of 1- to 3-inch leaflets; they open with a reddish hue in the spring. In early summer, they produce an abundance of 12- to 15-inch, loose clusters of small, yellow flowers. K. bipinnata, commonly known as the Chinese Flame Tree, grows from 30 to 40 feet high. The flowers of this tree are followed by reddish-orange seed pods that resemble miniature Chinese Lanterns. K. paniculata (Golden-Rain Tree) grows from 20 to 30 feet high. Balloon-like seed pods follow the yellow blossoms. They start out green, gradually turn pink and end up brown.

Pot Cultivation

Plant these trees in full sun, in the spring or fall. They will survive in almost any well-drained soil, even one that is alkaline, though loamy soil is the best. Trees that are well-established will tolerate drought. The Golden-Rain Tree can be grown in all areas except regions with very harsh winters. The Chinese Flame Tree can only be grown in mild climates. Trees over 12 feet should be planted balled and burlapped; trees that are shorter should be planted bare-rooted. Young trees may be pruned during the winter; old trees rarely need it.

Propagation

Seeds may be sown as soon as they are ripe, in sandy soil in a cold frame.
