Libertia

These perennials are found wild by streams and the forests of New Zealand. They are also known as New Zealand Satin Flowers. They can grow up to 3 feet high, depending on the variety, with a spread of up to 2 feet. They form clumps of narrow, rigid, dark green leaves, which usually turn brown at the tips. In early summer, small, white, Iris-like flowers (up to 3/4-inch across) are produced in spike-like clusters.

Pot Cultivation

These plants are only hardy in warm, mild climates. They should be grown in a warm, sheltered site, in sun or partial shade. The soil should be moist, but well drained, and enriched with compost or some other organic matter. In regions with cooler winters, protect the roots with leaves or salt hay.

Propagation

Seeds may be sown in the spring or fall, or the plants may be lifted and divided in the spring.
