Phlomis

These perennials (Jerusalem Sage) are natives of Turkey, North Africa, Europe and Asia. P. russeliana forms mounds, 3 feet high, of coarse, sage-green, hairy leaves that are broadly oval and heart-shaped at the base. The hooded, tubular, 2-lipped, light creamy yellow flowers are borne in whorls on stout stems, in the summer. This plant forms an excellent weed-smothering ground cover. The dried flower stems make pretty winter decorations.

Pot Cultivation

Grow these plants in somewhat fertile soil that has good drainage, in full sun. These plants may self-sow, so remove the flowers as soon as they've faded if seeds are not wanted.

Propagation

These plants may be divided in the spring, or seeds may be sown in light soil, in the fall. Cuttings may also be inserted in a closed frame in late summer.
