Stratiotes
S. aloides, commonly known as Crab's Claw, Water Aloe and Water Soldier, is a hardy, aquatic perennial found wild in various parts of Europe. This plant has small, fleshy, sword-shaped leaves that resemble a floating Pineapple or Aloe plant. Greenish-white, male and female flowers grow on separate plants. When the flowers of this plant die, the plant sinks beneath the water's surface and forms axillary shoots that grow into winter buds. The plant will reappear again in late summer.
Pot Cultivation
Since these are floating plants, they are simply set on the water's surface. This plant spreads quickly, so take care that it doesn't become troublesome.
Propagation
Offshoots or side growths may be taken from the bases of the leaves.
