Other Algae
If using a system of classification that was acceptable a number
of years ago, we might say that we have already considered all
the algal groups: the Cyanophyta, the Chlorophyta, the Phaeophyta,
and the Rhodophyta. But the classification system
employed in this and other recent texts includes additional algal phyla:
Xanthophyta, Euglenophyta, Chrysophyta, and Pyrrophyta. These are sometimes
not considered in a beginning botany course, but if there is enough
time, there is still enchantment to be found in these several groups.
