Performing a titration

Add one or two drops of indicator to the titrand contained in the conical flask. For a right-handed person the process is as follows:
  • Hold the conical flask containing the tit rand and the indicator in your right hand, and control the tap of the burette with your left hand. The burette should be arranged so that the tap is on the opposite side of the burette to your palm. In this way, your left hand also supports the body of the burette.
  • Add the titrant by opening the tap, and simultaneously swirl the contents of the conical flask. This may take a bit of practice, so do not worry if you cannot do it straight away. The titrant can be added quickly at first, but as the end-point approaches, additions should be made drop-wise.
  • The end-point is indicated when the appropriate colour change takes place. When the end-point is reached, one drop of titrant should be sufficient to cause the colour change. You should note the volume used for the titration to the nearest 0.1-D.05mL. This is done by reading off the volume of titrant used.
  • Refill the burette to the zero mark using a funnel ready for the next titration.
